Lunar Silver Coins

Like the Gold coin series, Lunar silver coins have been issued by the Royal Mint since 2014. The Lunar series of silver coins is created specifically for the United Kingdom and celebrates our multicultural community (we have one of the oldest Chinese communities in Western Europe). They are not to be confused with the Perth Royal Mint’s Lunar Silver Series which is similar in virtually every respect apart from the fact the coins are not produced in the UK and are therefore not classed as Legal Tender for Tax purposes. The Lunar series of coins is known as the Shengxiao Collection and is created with the typical fine craftsmanship and excellence associated with the Royal Mint. Currently, there are five coins in the Lunar series, however, once all the coins have been released, they will make up a 12-series collection, featuring every animal in the Chinese Zodiac.

More information

The latest coin in the Lunar silver series is the year of the pig. Released in 2019, the year of the pig coin has been designed by the artist Wuon-Gean Ho and is struck in .999 Solid Silver. The coin’s design features a striking image of a sow suckling five piglets whilst the reverse side of the coin features the Queen's fifth royal portrait, which was created by the British artist Jody Clark in 2015. The 1oz coin has a face value of £2. For someone born in the year of the pig, the coin would make a fantastic keepsake. The coin has a limited mintage and only 138,888 coins have been created.
These coins are an attractive investment for bullion investors and coin collectors alike. As members of the IFP - Institute for Financial Planning and PLSA - Pension and Lifetime Savings Association, we are pleased to recommend them for investments and pensions purposes. Their unique designs and the fact that there are only 12 coins in the collection gives them great investment appeal and they are an excellent alternative to traditionally more favoured bullion coins such as Britannia’s. There is currently a great many Chinese ethnics living in Britain which means that there is a huge potential market for Lunar Coins should you ever want to sell them in the future. They are also collected by investors from all over the world. The Lunar range is struck in .999 solid silver and due to being classified as legal tender coins in the United Kingdom, they have the added benefit of being VAT and CGT exempt. They are available in a selection of different sizes and denominations including 1oz coins, 5oz coins and 1-kilo coins. These coins have a face value of £2, £10 and £500 respectively. All of our Lunar silver coins are brand new and in flawless (mint) condition. The coins are individually packed and come in an airtight container to protect them.
